Are You a Manager or a Leader?
So, I get a lot asked a lot about the difference between management and leadership. I think people need both; organizations need both. You need managers to get things done and you need leadership to get people to want to do more stuff. So, a leader can’t lead unless there’s followers, whereas a manager works through motivational kind of things, whereas a leader works on more inspirational, some more intrinsic kind of things. Managers are task-oriented, leaders are purpose-oriented. A manager will train, and the leader will coach. The manager uses authority, and the leader will use influence. A manager gives direction, the leader sets direction. So, a manager believes they empower others to act, while a leader provides the space for people to take the empowerment over.
